Summer Classes 2017

Since 1993, Rainbow Art Studio has provided high quality art education and hands-on workshops to thousands of students in the Bay Area.  We customize our art program to meet each student’s needs and goals. Our individualized instruction encourages students of all ages to develop their artistic skills, creativity, and confidence.

All art camp courses will conclude with an informal critique and art show.


Exploration of Art

This is a class designed for beginners or students who would like to explore art in a fun and engaging way. In this course, students will develop a foundation in a variety of drawing and painting skills, in addition to learning fundamental sculpting and printmaking techniques. Topics covered include: form, color, composition, proportion, and perspective. Students will use a range of media such as graphite, charcoal, ink, watercolor, gouache paints and acrylic.

Character Design and Storytelling

This course teaches students how to create unique characters through the study of basic human anatomy, facial expressions and figurative motion. Students will use their imagination to illustrate a short story by forming comic strips. This class is ideal for students who are interested in animation or book illustration.

Sculpture

This hands-on class introduces a variety of techniques that transform 2D ideas into three-dimensional art. Students will sketch out ideas and bring them to life through carving, modeling, as well as additive and subtractive processes. Materials used include: clay, board, wire, fabric, plaster and recycled objects.

Architecture

In this course students will learn 2D and 3D design principles. Students will develop three-dimensional thinking through freehand sketching and detailing. We will introduce perspective-drawing techniques that lead to the formation of architectural drawings and models. Students will visualize and create 3D architectural prototypes using various materials, such as cardboard, modeling clay, and paper.

Fashion Illustration & Sewing

This course introduces students to fashion illustration through studies of basic human form, proportion and poses. Students will use ink pen, watercolor and markers to sketch fashion figures in different styles. They will practice hand-sewing using fabric and unconventional materials. Additionally, this course will include a brief historical survey of current well-known fashion designers such as Jean Paul Gautier, Vivienne Westwood, Jimmy Choo, etc.

Claymation

This is a hands-on and collaborative class that teaches students the process behind forming simple stop motion films. Students will compose scripts and design storyboards, sets, and characters to create their own short films. Some prior computer experience is recommended.

Computer Graphics

This course is an introduction to digital painting, photographic techniques, image editing and manipulation. Students will learn how to use the editing and drawing/painting tools in Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator, and will create their own digital art.

Large Scale Painting

Tired of painting on small surfaces? Interested in action painting? In this class, students are introduced to different painting surfaces, such as masonite board, canvas, cardboard and door skin. Students will explore the use of unconventional composition, texture and layering to create large-scale paintings. Previous painting experience is recommended, though not required. Demonstrations and individual/group critiques will be incorporated throughout the course.

Junior Portfolio Preparation

This course allows students to get a head start on building a strong portfolio for admission into an art college and /or as a supplement to a college application (an extracurricular). Students will develop a versatile skillset in a variety of traditional and non-traditional art media. This class is also focused on preparation for local, regional, and national art contests.

College Portfolio Preparation - Intensive Course

The College Portfolio course is tailored to high school and/or transfer students who have established skills in a variety of media and helps them to create a strong portfolio for admission into an art college or art related major. This course has emphases in fine arts, design, animation, architecture, fashion, and industrial design fields. It is also beneficial for students who want to prepare an art portfolio as a supplement to their college application. Previous students of this program have attended schools such as RISD, UCLA, CCA, Carnegie Mellon University, and the Art Center College of Design.

Figure Drawing

This class has a small student to teacher ratio in order to provide individualized instruction (maximum of 8 students). It explores human anatomy, proportion, and principles of movement and form. Students will capture the gesture, expression, and mood of each live model that performs short and long poses. They will express their own interpretation of the figure using mediums, such as charcoal, ink, chalk pastel, watercolor, acrylic paint, etc. This advanced class is great preparation for college portfolios as well as college level figure drawing. Prior drawing experience (not necessarily in figure drawing) is a prerequisite.

Adult Class

 

This class is directed towards adults who desire to have art as a conventional hobby or new career path. Students will gain a solid foundation of fundamental skills, including drawing (pencil, color pencil), painting (acrylic, watercolor, gouache), and mixed media. Students will also learn the concepts of color theory, composition, line quality, proportion, and depth. This is a comprehensive art education that is tailored individually, depending on the student's interests and goals. This is a great class for students looking to learn about art in a relaxed and fun environment. Both experienced and inexperienced students are welcome. * Material fee is $75.
