Since 1993, Rainbow Art Studio has provided high quality art education and hands-on workshops to thousands of students in the Bay Area. We customise our art program to meet each student’s needs and goals. Our individualised instruction encourages students of all ages to develop their artistic skills, creativity, and confidence. Students are introduced to fundamental art concepts of form, color, composition, and perspective. Students will work with a variety of media such as charcoal, watercolour, collage, and printmaking.
Our teaching philosophy is to listen to our aspiring artists and help guide them to their final masterpieces. Our teachers and assistants are always on hand and our students support and inspire each other. Founder & Head Instructor
Kyung Ahn
Kyung Ahn grew up with a passion for art and knew at a young age that she wanted to make a difference in the lives of others. After Kyung opened her studio in 1993, she wanted to continue her education -- majoring in Painting and receiving her Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts from San Francisco Art Institute. She also received her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Fine Arts from Sookmyung Women's University prior to opening the studio.
She taught as a high school art teacher, as well as a junior college professor, for several years before opening up Rainbow Art Studio in Cupertino, California in 1993. She has over 25 years of experience teaching art and is constantly amazed by her students' works.
Instructors
Meiru Huang
Meiru started learning art since she was a child, and she is experienced with various materials, such as charcoal, graphite, pastel, pen & ink, brush & ink, watercolor, acrylic, gouache, and oils. Meiru also has great interest in printmaking, wheel-throwing, and book art. She graduated with a Master of Fine Arts from San Jose State University in 2013 with an emphasis in Pictorial Art. Meiru is an art instructor and also an exhibiting artist in the Bay Area. Meiru says, “The most wonderful thing about teaching is that once in a while, we have a chance to help others make an important mark in their lives. When I was a student, I was greatly influenced by my art mentor. Given a teaching opportunity, I feel more than honored to contribute to our art community.”
Kathleen McDonald
Kathleen graduated with a Master of Fine Arts Degree from San Jose State University. Here, she taught three classes in traditional/analogue and digital techniques. She currently teaches graduate and undergraduate students at the Academy of Art University and is scheduled to teach an analogue photography class at San Jose State University in the fall of 2016.
Kathleen maintains her studio practice and has exhibited in galleries such as First Street Gallery in New York, SOMArts, and the De Young Museum. Her work was also commissioned by the University of the West Indies Cave Hill Credit Union in Barbados, and was installed as a permanent installation in January of 2016.
Michelle Lee
Michelle grew up a Northern California local and was exposed from an early age to the art and culture of the Bay Area. As one of Ms. Ahn’s first students, she was impacted by the Rainbow Art Studio matriarch's passion for her students, human kindness, classical music, and the power of art bringing together a community.
While at Calpoly State, San Luis Obispo (Graphic Design, with a concentration in Art & Design), she learned to surf, expanded her travels, and came back to the Bay -- completing her Bachelor of Arts and supplementing her studies in child development and elementary education. While moving through the corporate world after graduation, Michelle found her true calling lay with education and teaching – receiving as much happiness from her students as she hoped she was able to provide them.
Michelle’s art is a reflection of the simple things in life – colors and textures in cooking, canine love, event planning, volunteering, traveling to different parts of the world, outdoor excursions, reading the newspaper, being with loved ones, and watching sports (go 49ers and Giants!). Her goal is to merge everyday life experiences with her art background and bring a fresh perspective to broaden her students’ minds and creative spirit.
